Puzzle games that respect your time

Not every puzzle game is worth your time, and after playing dozens I've learned to spot the difference fast. The good ones teach you their rules quietly and then let you feel smart. The bad ones just make things harder and call it difficulty.

Hollow Lantern is a great example of doing it right. Its puzzles come from the environment, so the answer always feels reachable if you look carefully. I only needed a hint once, and even then it nudged rather than solved.

My tip: if a puzzle game locks progress behind timers or wait screens, be suspicious. The best offline puzzlers let you sit and think for as long as you like. Thinking is the whole point.

Give yourself permission to walk away from a stumper and come back later. Half the time the answer arrives when you're not staring at the screen.
