The best offline RPGs for long trips

Long journeys are where offline RPGs shine, and I've lost entire train rides to a good one. The trouble is finding titles that don't quietly need a server for something. Over the past few months I've been keeping notes on the ones that pass the airplane-mode test.

Embermark Saga sits at the top of my list. It's a proper turn-based adventure with a story that unfolds slowly, and it saves everything locally so an interrupted battle costs you nothing. I played most of it across two flights and never hit a wall.

The trick with these games is to lean into their pacing. Offline RPGs are usually built for longer sessions, so let yourself settle in rather than dipping in for two minutes. Read the item descriptions, experiment with your party, and you'll get far more out of them.

If you only download one thing before a trip, make it a role-playing game with a solid local save. It's the genre that best rewards the hours you're stuck without a signal.
